Shannon K's career sits at an unusual crossroads: she is the daughter of one of Hindi cinema's most recorded voices, yet she built her first audience thousands of miles from Bollywood, singing in English.

Early life and family

Shannon was born in Mumbai on 16 June 2001 into the household of playback singer Kumar Sanu and Saloni Bhattacharya, who married in 2001. Years later, in 2018, Kumar Sanu said on national television that the couple had adopted Shannon that year; he explained that he had long been hesitant to speak about it and that he was proud of what she had achieved. A younger sister, Annabel, followed, and would become Shannon's closest creative partner. Shannon did not grow up in India — she was raised largely in London and has described English as effectively her first language. She was on stage early, joining her father at his concerts in the United States, and has described herself as an introvert who found public attention daunting.

Training

In London she received formal music training, and she later studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in the US. By her own account her start was modest: she has said she began by singing in cafes and restaurants, and that her father made it clear she would have to find work like any other newcomer.

A pop debut with a message

After an early single at age 12, her real launch came in 2018 with "A Long Time", written and produced with Poo Bear. Within months she followed it with "Give Me Your Hand", a song about rising above bullying that drew on her own experience growing up. Produced by Kyle Townsend and co-written with Annabel, it was premiered by Billboard, featured several Hollywood actors in its video and was tied to The Jed Foundation's Love is Louder campaign. The song is credited in media reports with a Hollywood Music in Media Award.

Turning towards India

A pop duet with Sonu Nigam, "OMT", was her first prominent Indian collaboration. Because her Hindi was accented, her father advised her to study Urdu pronunciation before singing in the language. Her playback debut came with "Duggi" for Himesh Reshammiya's Happy Hardy and Heer in 2020. She then recorded a reprise of her father's "Pehla Pehla Pyar" as a personal tribute, collaborated with Shaan, and in 2024 reworked "Jimmy Jimmy" with Bappa Lahiri in memory of Bappi Lahiri, whom she had met shortly before his death. The family collaboration "9 to 5" (July 2024), written and composed by Annabelle, brought father and daughters together and marked Kumar Sanu's first song in English.

Acting

Shannon's screen work began with a cameo in the American film The Big Feed. Her Hindi debut, Chal Zindagi (released 26 May 2023), cast her as Sana, a music student from America who joins three strangers on a motorcycle journey to Leh-Ladakh; she also sang on the film's soundtrack. She appeared in the short film Rolling, directed by her sister, and has been attached to the series Mystical Inheritance of Adina Hassan.

Coachella and after

In April 2025 she performed at the Coachella festival in Indio, California, in a year that also featured Hanumankind and Indo Warehouse. Indian and diaspora media reported her as the first independent Indian-origin artist to play the festival, with a set mixing her own indie-pop songs with her father's Bollywood hits. She has since continued releasing music, including the single "OTT".

Outlook. Shannon keeps much of her personal life private and has spoken of balancing visibility with privacy on social media. Now 25, she works across two industries and two languages, with anti-bullying advocacy as the most consistent thread in her public voice.
